FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications: Features

Cut Software Costs with Concurrent License Management and Usage Analysis

Features

Centrally Track Usage for Multiple High-Value Applications

Specializing in Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Exploration & Production (E&P) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) applications, FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications centralizes software license management with the flexibility to monitor, manage, and report on the usage of a broad range of high-value software investments.

Track and Manage FlexEnabled Licenses

FlexEnabled applications are programs that have been instrumented with Flexera Software’s FlexNet licensing technology by their respective software vendors. There are over 20,000 FlexEnabled applications on the market from software vendors such as:

Abaqus
Altair
ANSYS
Autodesk
Cadence Design Systems
ESRI
Fluent
Landmark
MathWorks
Mentor Graphics
MSC
PTC
Rational
Schlumberger
Synopsys

As the makers of FlexNet licensing technology, Flexera Software is uniquely capable of providing organizations access to the most complete and meaningful insight into the software usage of these applications. Detailed usage analysis allows organizations to optimize licenses for these high value applications.

FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications’ concurrent license management capabilities allow you to track and report on actual software license usage across your organization. It catalogs all usage data in a centralized database that you can access anytime using FlexNet Manager's powerful reporting engine. This solution also offers a way to analyze usage and denial trends in relation to license terms, costs and organizational structure—see Software Investment Planner feature below.

With usage reports provided by FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications, you now have a complete understanding of your organization's actual licensing needs, so you can save money by making accurate software purchasing decisions. You can cut costs further by identifying underutilized licenses that can be shared among departments and determining which annual support plans no longer need to be renewed.

Track and Manage LUM-enabled Applications

If your organization relies on CATIA*, ENOVIA SmarTeam, and other LUM-enabled applications, you can use FlexNet Manager to report on and optimize these licenses too - all within a single interface and workflow. FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications has workflow integration with LUM license servers. This provides the ability to capture license files from LUM servers, monitor status of these servers and schedule regular log file captures to feed into the FlexNet Manager reporting system. The new user interface allows you to select LUM servers and set the import schedule.

*CATIA will be transitioning to Dassault Systems License Server with version R23

Optimize Licenses for Dassault Systems Applications

FlexNet Manager allows you to optimize licenses for Dassault Systems applications based on usage data analysis for applications that use Dassault Systems License Server (DSLS). Dassault is migrating off of IBM LUM to DSLS. FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications has workflow integration with DSLS license servers. This provides the ability to capture license files from DSLS servers, monitor status of these servers and schedule regular log file captures to feed into the FlexNet Manager reporting system. The user interface allows you to select DSLS servers and set the import schedule. FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications will continue to support IBM LUM for those customers that don’t migrate immediately.

Consolidate Reporting for Multiple License Servers

FlexNet Manager allows you to consolidate reporting for multiple license servers with a centralized interface. You can use FlexNet Manager to centralize your usage data, report on, and optimize these licenses too – all within a single interface and workflow. Take advantage of the robust reporting engine for all your FlexEnabled, LUM, and a diverse mix of applications using other license systems.

Operational Dashboard

The operational dashboard in FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications provides an out-of-the-box, near real-time license management reporting interface, Key components include:

  • License Feature Usage
  • License Feature Denials—timely insight to aid faster resolution
  • Excess License Usage by User report
  • License Server Status

The dashboard reports both FlexEnabled and LUM application status and provides quick, at-a-glance views into your daily operations. The Operational Dashboard is customizable by view and by user, allowing the creation of ‘my dashboard’ by each user.

Software Investment Planner

This powerful planning solution provides detailed insight into software usage and denial trends as they relate to contractual license terms, costs and organizational structure.

Get answers to critical business questions more quickly and easily using FlexNet Manager’s Software Investment Planner. Its flexible data model allows you to test various scenarios and get answers to any number of questions that begin with, “What if…?” Now you can better understand things like the benefits or pitfalls of new licensing models or pinpoint the most efficient way to distribute licenses across the organization.

Unlike any other tool on the market, it recommends purchase quantities based upon past usage trends and other customizable factors. This helps you to more accurately plan and budget for the future, identify the most efficient way to distribute licenses across the organization, and determine the right mix of software to purchase or retire in order to minimize software costs, effectively manage denials and address license compliance issues.

Borrowed License Reporting

Report on borrowed license usage compared to overall license usage. Borrowed licenses are used for computers that will be intermittently connected to the license server for some period of time and can incur a lower cost as compared to checking out a license for the entire period.

LDAP Integration for Reporting by Organizational Structure

FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications supports automated import of LDAP user and organizational data to allow more efficient organizational structure based reporting. The latest release also allows non-unique names for intermediate nodes in the corporate organizational structure—e.g. “IT Department” under both the North America and EMEA business units, as long as the full hierarchical path is unique.

Support for Tiered License Type (e.g. Autodesk)

FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications provides a license type for tiered licenses that will support, for example, the Autodesk Multiflex Tiered license. Tiered license reports provide insight into product tier usage to help optimize future purchases. Tiered license reporting for Autodesk matches the vendor’s bundling of products and requirements for compliance reporting.

Tiered License Reports Support the Following:

  • Autodesk Compliance Reporting—including Peak and 2nd Highest Peak Usage
  • Enterprise Tier Chargeback Reporting
  • Reporting on Tier Borrowed License Usage and Tier Usage for Server Pools

Support for Token Based License Type (e.g. Cadence)

FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications provides a license type for token based licenses that will support, for example, Cadence Design Systems’ Token Based License. Token based reports allow organizations to see when they are using an expensive tool (e.g. a higher level of features) when a less expensive one would do.

Efficient Data Management

FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications provides data organization in hourly, daily and monthly aggregations to ensure the right data is captured and organized at the right granularity for disk savings and significantly improved reporting performance. It also allows users to set Data Management and Retention Policy to automate control of data retention and clean up based on business reporting needs. This functionality enables you to achieve your business reporting goals, while saving on database disk space and improving reporting performance.

Common Report Log

FlexNet Manager provides Common Report Log functionality that enables enterprises to define a report log format and import it using the FlexNet Manager user interface or the command line. This enables enterprises to import non-FlexNet and non-LUM report logs for usage reporting and tracking purposes. This allows FlexNet Manager to provide comprehensive reporting across all of your concurrently licensed engineering and technical applications and enables consolidated planning for your enterprise-wide software licensing needs.

Options File Editor

As vendor options change, you can use FlexNet Manager to edit the options file to customize the behavior of the vendor daemons in your environment.
