This compelled Sentinel IC to search for a solution that allowed them to more effectively monetize their solutions in this space, while also minimizing revenue leakage.

Indeed, the increasing use of virtualization and cloud technologies by its customers can cause compliance issues—since multiple users in multiple locations could easily appear as one user in one location to any server running Sentinel’s software.

The right capabilities, easily tailored

Prior to implementing FlexNet Publisher, Sentinel was using its own home-grown licensing and entitlement management solution. With a staff of highly-skilled developers, it seemed feasible to create and maintain a solution.

But Sentinel IC’s home-grown solution had several shortcomings. While it performed its limited host ID-based controls well, it didn’t provide FlexNet Publisher’s flexibility and sophistication—especially when it came to virtualization. Sentinel IC also received some negative feedback from customers about its software’s licensing interface.

“Customers expect a slicker interface and, quite frankly, something that looks and feels like what they’ve seen before,” explains Juan. “In my industry, that pretty much means FlexNet Publisher.”

FlexNet Publisher provided exactly what Sentinel IC needed functionally. “Flexera Software gives us complete control over who, what, where and when our software is used—including sites and time zones,” notes Juan. “Control of all those parameters is absolutely essential for ensuring that our software is used correctly and that we receive full, fair compensation from our customers for the value they receive from us.”

in FlexNet Publisher immediately paid for itself several times over. For instance, shortly after having implemented FlexNet Publisher licensing, the company began receiving calls from customers saying that they were having problems with Sentinel IC’s software. The ensuing discussions quickly revealed that these customers were having these problems because they had been attempting to use the software beyond the entitlements set forth in Sentinel IC’s license agreements.

“The customers, of course, expressed surprise at this—and then asked us for quotes on licenses that would cover their intended use,” recalls Juan. “The resulting orders immediately covered the cost of our initial FlexNet Publisher deployment.”
