Advanced MSI Repackaging Workshop

This 3-day interactive workshop covers key design and diagnostic concepts and applies them to your packaging situation. Attendees can bring 1 or 2 "problem" applications you are struggling to package. The instructor will work with you one-on-one to solve your issues.

Instructor training delivered as onsite or through public courses

What You Will Learn
  • How to overcome extremely difficult packaging challenges.
  • How to diagnose error messages.
  • How to interpret ACE rules messages.
  • What to do when a packaged application fails to run.

Intended Audience
This workshop is intended for skilled packagers, not beginners. Only people who have taken an AdminStudio course and fully understand Windows Installer should attend.

Attendance is limited to 15 attendees to assure the highest quality knowledge transfer.

Prerequisites
  • In-depth knowledge of Windows Installer
  • You can bring your own notebook computer with your problem applications
  • If you do not bring applications, some will be available for your use

Day 1

Morning Session

  • Best practices overview
  • Packaging key concepts
  • Prepare workstation for repackaging
  • Discuss issues encountered by attendees

Afternoon Session

  • Repackage one application using complex scenario
  • Troubleshoot errors
  • Validation errors
  • Discuss lockdown environment, permission, security issues, and self-repair

Day 2

Morning Session

  • Discuss individual errors encountered on Day 1 and how they were resolved
  • Prepare workstation for additional repackaging

Afternoon Session

  • Repackage second app using complex scenario
  • Troubleshoot errors
  • Install and test repackaged applications
  • Conflict solving

Day 3

Morning Session

  • Q/A session about various repackaging best practices implemented
  • Add conditions and custom actions to packages

Afternoon Session

  • Create transforms for application which need license prompts, shortcut removal/creation 
  • Review
